Crypto Mom Hester Peirce Leaves SEC For Regent University Law Professor Role

Hester Peirce, the SEC commissioner known as "Crypto Mom," will leave the agency in November 2026 to join Regent University Law School as an associate professor, departing with major digital-asset rulemaking still incomplete. Her term officially expired in June 2025, and she has been serving under the statutory provision allowing commissioners to remain up to approximately 18 months beyond term expiration, according to TradingView. Peirce's exit marks the end of a decade-long tenure defined by frequent dissents against enforcement-heavy approaches to crypto under former Chair Gary Gensler, who departed January 20, 2025.

Peirce became the public face of the SEC's pivot toward crypto clarity when Acting Chairman Mark Uyeda launched the Crypto Task Force on January 21, 2025, naming her as its leader. The task force was established to craft a regulatory framework for digital assets, and Peirce subsequently drove several initiatives, including the Commission's June 26, 2025 approval of in-kind creations and redemptions for crypto exchange-traded products. She also proposed a "safe harbor" for crypto projects and, in February 2025, the SEC began pausing pending crypto lawsuits initiated under the prior regime, with the Commission requesting stays in case after case.

Despite those moves, market-structure legislation remains stalled in Congress, and the SEC has signaled it will rely on rulemaking, exemptive orders, and staff-level relief to facilitate on-chain stock trading and other innovations. Peirce has also flagged securities-law risks in crypto vaults and on-chain lending, areas where formal guidance remains pending. Her departure leaves the Crypto Task Force without its founding leader, raising questions about continuity as Chairman Paul Atkins' "Project Crypto" initiative, described November 12, 2025, continues the agency's framework-building effort. Peirce's academic move begins in November, and the SEC has not yet named a successor to lead the task force.
